About roothide Bootstrap
Understanding the technology behind iOS customization
What is roothide?
roothide is a revolutionary framework for iOS that enables system-level modifications without traditional root access. Unlike conventional jailbreaks that modify system files directly, roothide uses advanced techniques to provide a jailbreak-like experience while maintaining system integrity.
roothide Bootstrap is the complete implementation of this framework, providing users with a full-featured bootstrap environment for iOS devices running iOS 15.0 through 17.0. It combines the Procursus bootstrap with package managers like Sileo and Zebra, plus per-app tweak injection. For a detailed comparison with traditional jailbreaks, see roothide vs jailbreak.
Project status: The project is actively maintained. 2.0 public beta7 adds injection for more system apps and daemons, automatic re-injection after iOS updates, improved tweak compatibility, and fixes for VPN, Sileo on iOS 15, cellular settings, and TaskPortHaxx on early iOS 16. See changelog and download.
How Does It Work?
roothide Bootstrap operates differently from traditional jailbreaks:
- No Direct System Modification: Instead of modifying system files directly, roothide uses advanced injection techniques
- Application-Level Injection: Tweaks are injected into specific applications rather than system-wide
- TrollStore Integration: Uses TrollStore for installation, providing a more stable foundation
- Developer Mode Support: Leverages iOS developer mode for enhanced functionality
